John Murray Bernier

John Murray Bernier, 88, of Salem, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2025. Born on August 5, 1937, in Skowhegan, Maine, John lived a full and joyful life devoted to family, nature, and adventure. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, John went on to an accomplished career as Senior Vice President and Director of International Construction for McDonald’s Corporation. His professional life took him across the globe, but his heart remained grounded in the simple joys of home and the outdoors.

John shared many wonderful years with his beloved wife, Charlotte, traveling the world. On his travels, he loved biking in foreign countries, as well as snowmobiling and skiing. They also loved cooking together and finding happiness in life’s everyday moments. His love for nature was unmatched. He spent countless hours tending his property, never making peace with the squirrels raiding his bird feeders, and hauling 200 (literally) bags of mulch down the trail to the lake. His favorite hobby was wood crafting, and he made many amazing pieces. His dogs were his constant companions and, as his children fondly recall, sometimes his favorite “kids.”

Beyond his work and family, John gave his time generously as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Margaret Chase Smith Library. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; his children, Julie, John, Mike, Pam, and Todd; five grandchildren—Allison, Mike, Austin, Dara, and Tyler; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

John will be remembered for his zest for life, his love of family, and his commitment to living each day fully.
