Dr. Jose Martinez

Dr. José Enrique "Piky" Martínez, age 74, passed away on June 22, 2026, in Seneca, South Carolina. Born on December 21, 1951, in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, José lived a life marked by intellectual curiosity, professional achievement, and deep devotion to his family and faith.

José's academic journey was one of remarkable dedication and accomplishment. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Interamerican University in Puerto Rico before pursuing a Master of Science in Biochemistry at the Medical College of Milwaukee in Wisconsin. His passion for science and discovery led him back to Puerto Rico as a biochemist conducting research in the rainforest for the U.S. government. He subsequently returned to academia at Georgia Tech to acquire a PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry.

Dr. Martínez' career reflected his commitment to improving air quality and advancing environmental science. He began his professional journey at Georgia Tech before moving on to work with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He later contributed his expertise to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and concluded his career at an environmental consulting firm in Gainesville, Florida. Renowned for his technical skill and problem-solving abilities, José utilized sophisticated detection methods to measure air quality and maintained complex instrumentation with precision and ingenuity.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jose was a man of many passions. A lifelong car enthusiast, he developed a love for mechanics while growing up alongside his grandfather, who owned a garage and towing service in their small town. This passion endured throughout his life as he worked on project cars with Karen, his beloved wife, until his final hospitalization.

José’s faith was central to his life. A devoted Christian, he studied the Bible daily and shared his love for the Lord with friends and family through witnessing and conversation. His unwavering belief guided him in all aspects of his life, including his relationships with those he held dear. José is survived by Karen Boles, whom he cherished deeply. He is also survived by his children, Sonia Allio (Christopher), his grandchildren Jino and Daphne, and his son Seve Martinez (Olivia Pellish). Additionally, he has a sister and three brothers—one brother residing in Texas and the rest in Puerto Rico—along with numerous friends and colleagues who were touched by his kindness and dedication. He was preceded in death by both parents and one brother.

José’s legacy is one of love, determination, and generosity. He was steadfastly committed to providing for his family, ensuring that his children had every opportunity to succeed in life. He approached every project with meticulous care and an insistence on doing things the right way, never compromising on quality or effort. Dr. José Enrique "Piky" Martínez will be remembered as a man who loved deeply—his Lord, his family, and his many pursuits—and whose life was defined by integrity, hard work, and devotion. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A Memorial Gathering will be held on August 15, 2026, from 03:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
