Mary Ann Arnold

Mary Ann Arnold, affectionately known by many as “Nanny,” passed away on July 20, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on April 28, 1943, in Greenville, South Carolina, Mary’s life was a testament to resilience, determination, and the profound love she held for her family and friends.

The daughter of John and Mary Massey, Mary was one of ten children, a background that beautifully shaped both her strength and her deep sense of community. She graduated from Oak Way High School before embarking on a long and dedicated career, retiring from Springs Industries, where she was known for her exemplary work ethic and her never-failing positivity. Even after retirement, her energy and devotion to others never waned.

A proud member of White Springs Baptist Church, Mary cultivated friendships wherever she went. Her welcoming spirit and kind heart left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Among recent joyful milestones, Mary was crowned Prom Queen at White Oak Manor, a moment that reflected her enduring grace and the warmth she brought to every room.

Mary’s journey was marked by remarkable courage and perseverance. She faced and beat cancer twice, overcame a stroke, and never stopped working or giving of herself. Her resolve was matched only by her compassion, qualities that inspired friends, family, and caregivers alike. In her later years at White Oak Manor in Lancaster, SC, she found an extended family in the caring Unit 2 staff and her devoted assistants, whose kindness brightened her days and who, in turn, held a special place in Mary’s heart.

Family was always central to Mary’s world. She is survived by her loving children: daughter Cynthia Nix, son Gary Evatt, and daughter Candice Grau. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Melissa Nix, Cody Nix, Brittani Funderburk, Tyler Grau, Taylor Finley, Levi Evatt, Gunnar Grau and Jaxon Evatt; her great-grandchildren Houston Stone, Hope Stone, Katelyn Walters, Lauren Walters, Liam Funderburk, Laila Funderburk, Emberley Smith, and Kai Park; her great great grandchildren Remmington Stone, Raelynn Stone, River Stone, Alaia Graham, and Ayva Graham. Mary’s unwavering familial bonds are also cherished by her siblings: Johnny Massey, Elizabeth Lay, Joan Patterson, Frank Massey, and Ruth Holland.

Mary’s memory is honored as well by those who preceded her in death: her grandsons Trey Evatt and Alex Evatt; brothers Clyde Massey and James Massey; sisters Faye Cox and Hazel Massey; and her beloved parents, John and Mary Massey.

During this time, the family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the Unit 2 Staff at White Oak Manor in Lancaster, SC, for the dedication and care shown to Mary throughout her final years. They also extend thanks to the many assistants who became like family, enriching Mary's life with kindness and companionship.

To honor Mary’s life, visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Cremation Society of South Carolina - Brown Funerals, 101 E North 2nd St, Seneca, SC. The funeral service will follow at the same location from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. A burial will take place at Memory Gardens Inc, 586 Issaqueena Trail, Central, SC 29630.

Mary Ann Arnold’s life was defined by unwavering strength, the love she so freely gave, and her enduring faith. Her legacy of kindness, perseverance, and devotion will been deeply felt and honored by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
