Steven Charles Brucker, 74, of Seneca, SC, passed away surrounded by family on August 12, 2026 at Rainey Hospice House in Anderson, SC after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer.

Born in South Charleston, WV, and raised in St. Albans, WV, Steve was the son of the late Nelson Norman and Clara Mae Sheets Brucker. Steve was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 37 years, Kathleen Mereda Kelly Brucker, who passed in 2025.

Steve earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech and was licensed as a Professional Engineer. Steve used his engineering credentials throughout his 38 year career with Chicago Bridge & Iron (CB&I). Steve’s career brought him around the world with assignments across the US and expat experiences in France, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates. Steve’s coworkers described him as hardworking, professional, well-respected, and a good man. Friendships he made during his working years carried through to the end of his life.

Before her passing, Steve’s wife, Kathleen, noted that she had always been drawn to Steve’s responsibility, honesty, and security. Steve exhibited these traits in every facet of his life. Through his experiences leading Scouting troops, volunteering with the local food bank, and other quieter forms of service, Steve exemplified a sense of reliability and steadfastness. His children could depend on him for support and guidance at any time. He taught them frugality and accountability and was a constant presence in their lives. They will miss him immensely.

Those close to him saw Steve’s more playful side. He had a unique sense of humor strengthened by his quick mind. He enjoyed a round of pub trivia or answering along with the Jeopardy contestants from his big, comfy chair, preferably with a purring cat on his lap. He loved to build and launch model rockets. Steve was always ready to cheer on his Virginia Tech Hokies through any sporting event. In retirement he found joy in returning to active hobbies of golf and tennis. Lately, his greatest joy was to spend time with his granddaughter, reading her books and aiming to make her laugh and smile.

Steve is survived by his children: John Brucker (Lyndsay) and Betsy Harris (Rich); granddaughter: Kathleen Brucker; siblings: Dave Brucker (Betsy) and Alice Szekunda; and countless cherished friends from childhood, college, career, and retirement.

According to his wishes, no funeral services will be held at this time though a memorial event may be scheduled in the future. Those who wish to be included are encouraged to reach out to Steve’s children for more information. Steve will be laid to rest alongside his wife at Calvary Cemetery in Media, PA.
