AQUAMATION options
A Gentle, Environmentally Friendly Alternative
Water cremation, also called alkaline hydrolysis or aquamation, is a gentle process designed to return the body to its natural elements using water rather than flame.
The process takes place inside a specially designed chamber where water is heated and combined with a natural alkaline solution. This carefully controlled environment accelerates the natural decomposition process that would otherwise take place in the earth.
Through aquamation, the body is reduced to its basic components, primarily water, carbon, and bone. The bone remains are preserved throughout the process and are then carefully dried and processed into a fine, ash-like substance. These remains are returned to the family in much the same way as traditional cremated remains.
Why Consider Aquamation?
- Better for the Environment: Aquamation requires considerably less energy than traditional flame cremation, making it an appealing choice for families looking for a more environmentally conscious option.
- Gentle and Dignified: The process follows a natural method of decomposition in a controlled setting, providing a peaceful and respectful alternative for your loved one.
- A Cleaner Process: Aquamation uses water and a natural alkaline solution rather than flame and does not produce the same harmful emissions associated with traditional cremation.
- Meaningful Memorial Options: The resulting bone remains are very similar to those produced through flame cremation, allowing families to choose from many of the same options for memorialization, including urns, keepsakes, and other tributes.
How Does Aquamation Work?
1. Preparation
Once your loved one is brought into our care, they are respectfully placed inside a specially designed aquamation chamber.
2. Aquamation Process
The chamber is filled with a combination of water and an alkaline solution and heated to approximately 160–180°F. Over several hours, this gentle process naturally breaks down the body.
3. Returning the Remains
Once the process is complete, the remaining bone is carefully dried and processed into a fine, ash-like material. The remains are then placed in an urn or another memorial container of your family's choosing.
A More Sustainable Way to Say Goodbye
For families who want to make an environmentally conscious choice while still honoring their loved one, aquamation offers a meaningful alternative. By using water instead of fire, the process requires less energy and helps reduce emissions and environmental impact.
Aquamation provides families with a gentle, dignified, and sustainable option—one that allows you to honor your loved one while also considering the future of our environment.
